This species is endemic to the island of Madagascar. The type specimen for this species was collected adjacent to Lac Ravelobe, from which its scientific name is derived. Based on morphological measurements, Zimmermann
et al. (1997, 1998) concluded that two species of mouse lemur inhabited the forests of Ankarafantsika in north-western Madagascar, where
M. ravelobensis is now known to occur sympatrically with
M. murinus. It is also known from the Bongolava Classified Forest and Mariarano Classified Forest (Mittermeier
et al. 2008). It occurs from sea-level to 500 m.
