Moremi Game Reserve - Chief's Island, Botswana (Center on Interactive Map)

We went out into the bush for a walking safari with a fake dugout canoe. This was the best campsite anywhere with two lions hunting within site of the camp. We were also visited by a couple of elephants.

Africa: Eastern and Southern

12/10/2002: For this portion of the safari, we flew in a cessna to a camp where we stayed for one night. In the morning we went with Moiseppe for an overnight into the bush in a dugout canoe. When we arrived at the campsite, we discovered two lions not more than a couple hundred yards away. I did not take my eyes off the lions for even a minute, and neither did they stop watching us.

We hiked around for awhile in the bush, and there were large animals everywhere. We even had a close encounter with a hyena.

Later in the afternoon, we arrived at our camp to see our lions chasing a herd of wildebeest. And there was an unsettling encounter with a huge elephant that came into the campsite.

During the night, we built a very large fire to keep all the predators at bay. This was, without a doubt, the most interesting camping experience I had ever had.
