- 1999-08-11: I met up with some friends and friends of friends in Bucharest where we hired a van a driver to show us around Romania. We were all here to see our first solar eclipse. The trip was great fun, and we visited the requisite Dracula locations before eclipse day. On the morning of the eclipse, it was pouring rain, and we had to come up with a plan to get to some sunny skies. We decided that a nearby mountain range might block the clouds, and we headed into the mountains. About 20 minutes before second contact, we crossed over a mountain pass into a sunny area where, coincidentally, the cousin of our driver lived. The eclipse was spectacular with the farm animals acting strangely and going to bed during the totality. Shortly after the totality, a major lightening storm whipped through our area proving our extreme luck in seeing the eclipse.
