Around The World in 66 Days
1/10/2013
: Little did we know that we were riding the slooooow train to Chongzuo. The train snaked though the first of the limestone outcroppings that are common in this part of the world, so that was scenic. In addition, we were treated to the train shopping network. We had the opportunity to buy some socks, toys, and even a toothbrush that was effective against "moth teeth"
Upon arrival in Chongzuo, we checked in to a hotel next to the train station. This very fancy hotel even had a 15 year old computer hooked up to the internet. We hailed a taxi from in front of the hotel, and we were very pleased and surprised that the driver knew all about the langur monkey reserve.
Unfortunately, the driver did not consider that we might want a ride back to town after monkey viewing, and we had a strange contentious conversation about getting another cab to come and get us when it got dark. At least, that is what we hoped that we communicated. At any rate, we were off to the jungle to look for monkeys even though we were told that we could not see them until the morning.
I think this is where some of the better luck on the trip came in. As we were walking on some trails in the jungle, we heard some very odd loud noise which could only have been the langur monkeys. We were able to watch them for about 15 minutes before they bailed into the forest.
There is another spot where the monkeys go to spend the night. There was a 50-foot high tower with bright lights to illuminate their resting spot. We stood near the tower at sunset to wait for the langurs to arrive, but they never did while we were there.
When we arrived to the taxi pickup spot, there was no taxi. But, our luck, only a couple of minutes later, a taxi arrived. We made it back to Chongzuo in time for a dinner of pickled spicy fruits and sugary popcorn.
