Formerly restricted to British Isles and the Alps; the breeding range has expanded in recent decades, and now occurs discontinuously eastwards through southern Norway, southwestern Sweden, and Denmark east to southern Poland, Slovakia, and northern Romania. Introduced (mostly or entirely cabaret?) to New Zealand.
