• 2025-01-21: We decided it best to skip the country before Presidente Poopypants was sworn into office, so we booked a flight to Spain for the morning of the inauguration. The flight went more or less to plan though I managed to lose my sunglasses on the plane as well as acquiring a few bedbug bites. Arriving in a foreign country is always very depressing for me, as I am usually very quick to discover all of the completely stupid ideas that we have in America regarding infrastructure. In Barcelona, for instance, we arrive to find many streets all around which are not completely devoted to the private automobile. One can ride on a subway, arriving frequently and at convenient hours, into a neighborhood where people are walking around shopping, dining, playing soccer, and so on. It's not like there are no cars in the downtown area, they are just funneled away from the places where people enjoy their lives. We did not see any ranting lunatics, the streets were not full of trash, in fact there are people with sidewalk sweeping machines keeping everything tidy. San Francisco is the closest thing that I know of in the USA where people come first, and plenty of people are losing their minds because of any idea of closing a street to cars. Or making the cars pay for their own costs. They all claim that the lack of car traffic and free parking is bankrupting their businesses, but that is simply not the case in almost every other civilized country. People flock to the closed streets to spend their money. We walked from our hotel over to visit the Sagrada Familia. This cathedral was designed by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi. It is very impressive with unique architecture. The next day, we took a walk up to an area full of botanical gardens near the center of Barcelona, taking a path around a castle from where you can get an overlook of Barcelona with the Sagrada Familia Cathedral very much standing out.
